They don't make em like they used to. Dr. Bridgforth was incredibly knowledgeable about so many things. Today, you will often get a referral to a specialist for every little thing. Dr. Bridgforth helped keep cost down for patients as he was able to manage many things without a referral to a higher-cost specialist. He did not say much, because he listened to his patients. He worked long hours. He has had a great deal of influence on my own nursing practice. The community has been at a loss since he retired (which was much deserved). To his family and the wonderful woman behind this great man, he will be mourned.

I am so sorry for your loss. Lewis has always been a big part of our large family and he meant a lot to a lot of people. Not only caring and smart but Lewis was funny as well and I always enjoyed that. I had a neighbor, Sherri Rice who we became close friends with over the years and in conversation once we learned that even they knew Lewis from living in Blackstone, VA and he was their Doctor. They couldn't believe I was related to him as they said he was basically famous and had nothing but glowing thoughts of him. We will all miss you Lewis. Lots of Love and Condolences to all the Lewis fans and especially to the family. We are here for you.

Lewis was my lifelong friend all the way back to growing up in Crewe. I cherish many great memories of time spent with him and Betty through the years and a wonderful friendship with Jennifer Lee. I remember his saying when in medical school that he always wanted to be a general practioner in a small town. Victoria was blessed to have him all those years. He was a brilliant doctor with a great sense of humor. Heaven truly gained an angel. My prayers are with all his family.

I feel so fortunate to have experienced the care of Dr. Bridgeforth as a kid. He took care of most things throughout my life and was so helpful to send me to a great surgeon when I tore my ACL playing basketball in high school. I have fond memories of the office and his friendly humming while he examined me during our visits. He was a great example of a caring, community doctor and most folks won't ever know what that's like. I know his family will miss him dearly. My deepest condolences to Betty, Jennifer, Lewis, and family.

I was blessed some years ago in meeting the Bridgforths at our family vacation spot in Nags head, North Carolina. Dr. Bridgforth had a special charm and great sense of humor and brought much laughter and smiles to my family. Last year we were fortunate enough to be able to help him walk to the ocean and assist him as he stood with his feet in the surf and the smile on his face was priceless. Thank you Dr. Bridgforth for those wonderful memories and may God bless and bring comfort to your loved ones who miss you dearly.

We have lost another legend and true Country Doctor. Dr. "B" will always be my role model, family friend, and colleague. Lewis had the full package and exemplified what a great Family Doc can do for his patients and community. He was compassionate, smart, available, and an expert diagnostician. He rarely if ever missed a diagnosis in my opinion, and he spent many hours staying up to date with current medical practice. He always made you feel comfortable no matter what the problem was. Our family will always hold him in high regard and will miss him along with his warm smile, rhythmic hum, and chuckling laugh. Dr. Clay Hall

Betty, You have my deepest regrets on the passing of Lewis. He was the first med student I met in September 1962 outside Warner Hall at MCV. Our friendship endured as the "old time Docs in Southside Va. who really cared for their Patients. My fondest memories of the two of you was our private bar meetings in your rooms at the Medical Society of VA meetings thru the years. You and Lewis will be forever remembered as dedicated medical providers of Southside Va. Best regards, Jerry Burnett

Lewis (Doc as I knew him all my life) was not only our family physician but a dear friend to me and my parents. Lewis and his wife Betty ran a top notch medical practice in Victoria and I spent a lot of time in Lewis' care. I have such fond memories of Lewis and his family on summer vacations. Lewis was a saint in caring for my mom and dad over the years who had some significant medical events. Even after retirement, Lewis was always there to answer a medical question and be my dad's fishing buddy. He will be missed immensely.

Lewis William Bridgforth, 81, of Victoria, Virginia died on Thursday, October 8, 2020.  He leaves behind Betty Wood Bridgforth, his best friend and beloved wife of 58 years; his son Lewis W. Bridgforth III of Richmond, VA; his daughter Jennifer-Lee B. Hite (Haynie) of Goochland, VA; and his granddaughter Catalina Acosta and grandsons Maben B. Hite, Riley H. Hite, and Isaac R. Hite.  Lewis was a graduate of Crewe High School, Hampden-Sydney College, and the Medical College of Virginia.  He began his practice in Victoria in 1966 and served the community until he retired in 2008.  He was a recipient of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award and the Medical Society of Virginia Community Service Award.  He was a founding father and dedicated board member of Benchmark Community Bank.  He also served on the board of Lunenburg Health Service.  He volunteered his time to provide free physicals to youth, middle, and high school athletes.  Lewis enjoyed the stock market, reading, fishing, and gardening.  Forever the optimist, he planted pecan trees when he was 72 because he wanted a pecan pie.
